Renewable Energy
Students in the Renewable Energy program acquire hands-on skills in installation, operation, repair and replacement of related equipment. The program prepares you to pursue careers in the renewable energy field through coursework focused on solar and wind energy production and usage.
The AAS degree along with related job experience, will allow you to sit for the solar PV installer exam (offered by NABCEP) and the LEED AP exam (offered by the Green Building Council).
Renewable energy technicians install and maintain sustainable energy systems. These systems rely on energy from wind, geothermal, biofuels, and solar sources rather than traditional fossil fuels like gas and oil. Renewable energy technicians work in various locations such as:
- Homes
- Commercial buildings
- Construction sites
- New turbine installation locations
- Other environments that have renewable energy installations and/or maintenance needs
What’s the Job Outlook for Renewable Energy Technicians?
The salary for renewable energy technicians depends on location, experience and the particular company hiring the individual. An average yearly wage for this type of technician is around $44,890. It is possible to earn much more over time and with a continuance of education to stay current in the field.
What’s Required to Complete the Renewable Energy Technology Program?
A certificate in renewable energy technology from WCCCD requires 38 credits to complete. An AAS in renewable energy technology from WCCCD requires 62 total credits.
As a renewable energy technology student at WCCCD, you’ll take both general education courses and courses required for a renewable energy technology major.
Some students plan to transfer to a four-year college or university after earning their AAS. If that’s your goal, you might choose specific courses. Talk with your advisor about a personalized plan that meets your goals.
How Long Does it Take to Earn a Renewable Energy Technology Degree?
Most renewable energy technology students take four semesters (2 years) to complete AAS degree prerequisites and required courses.
What Will I Learn as a Renewable Energy Technology Student?
The WCCCD renewable energy technology program provides students with the theoretical knowledge necessary for a career in energy management and renewable energy technology fields, with special emphasis on solar panel (PV) installation. Courses cover a wide range of topics, including physics, engineering, and other math and science disciplines.
