Off-Campus Jobs

FWS students interested in off-campus employment should contact the Work Study Placement Office at (313) 496-2634 for eligible off-campus locations.

Note: Once you are placed to work in a department, they cannot switch that location within that semester.

Job Search Tips & FAQs

Arrive 10-15 minutes early and show the employer that you are genuinely interested in the position.

Bring a copy of your resume.

Read the job description and think about the skills and abilities the interviewer will seek. 

Market your skills and abilities to the employer: show results and impact from previous employers.

Know why you want to work in that department.

Be prepared to tell the interviewer your class schedule and the hours you can work.

Dress in professional business attire for the interview, and make sure your clothing/accessories are appropriate.

    • You may work in no more than one work-study position at a time.
    • Student employees are never allowed to work more than 30 29 hours per week.
    • Always dress appropriately for the position.
    • Please do not allow friends to visit you while you are at work.
    • Please do not use office computers for personal work while you are on the clock, and if you do, check with your supervisor beforehand to see that it is okay.
    • Be on time for work, and if you are absent, inform your employer in advance why you are unable to work.
    • Communicate with your supervisor and discuss any problems or concerns immediately.
    • Be responsible for your actions
    • When you finish a task, ask your supervisor if you can be assigned other tasks.
    • Learn to take constructive criticism: It is a tool whose sole purpose is to improve your performance, which essentially helps you master valuable skills that you will need in the future.
    • You can be terminated for inadequate job performance, excessive unexcused absences from work, insubordination, or failure to follow the rules in your workplace.
    • Do not quit a work-study job because you are reluctant to discuss a problem with your supervisor. 
    • You may choose where you would like to apply and work. Placement is subject to availability and best fit.
    • Campus Presidents (or designees) will interview and have some input on hiring selection
    • You will learn and develop valuable skills that are needed to obtain employment through your interview and employment process.
    • Your skills are valuable.
    • Promptness and professionalism is vital, so report to work on time and do your best.
    • Do a good job and earn the rewards!

    You must be able to demonstrate FWS eligibility for the current academic year by completing the Summer Application on the first Monday in March (Business Day) at one of the five campus locations. You can contact the District Financial Aid Department for location verification.
