Craft brewing isn’t just for enjoying—learn the fundamentals of the industry and launch a career in the ever-growing brewing industry today!

At the District, we offer a short-term certificate program for those interested in learning the ins and outs of the brewing industry. In this program, you will learn: 

  • The basics of brewing and fermentation
  • How to keep the process safe and sanitary
  • Operations, management, and marketing fundamentals
  • What equipment to use for bottling, production, and packaging 
  • And, gain an understanding of the agriculture and microbiology of craft beer

Our program fully prepares students for the Institute of Brewing and Distilling certification exams. 

What do craft brewers do?

Craft brewers are involved in every step of the beer-making process. They set up, operate and tend to all beer production equipment–filter presses, centrifuges, batch stills, and fermenting tanks–that extract and separate materials to make a refined product. 

Where do craft brewers work?

Craft brewers typically work in small-scale and independently owned operations, known as micro or craft breweries, that produce small amounts of beer. The industry has grown in popularity since 2013, as breweries and consumers have expressed more interest in high-quality, flavorful products.

How long does it take to earn a Craft Brewing Certificate?

It takes 2 semesters, or one year, to earn a Craft Brewing Certificate.

What will I learn in the Craft Brewing Program?

In this program, you will learn how to brew and ferment beer; best practices in safety and sanitation; operation, marketing, and management best practices; what equipment you need to bottle, produce and package beer, and the specifics of craft beer microbiology. 

What courses do I need to take to complete the program? 

To earn a certificate,  you’ll need to take 21 credit hours worth of courses. A recommended course sequence can be found below:

Where is the Craft Brewing Certificate offered? 

The Craft Brewing Certificate program is offered at our Ted Scott campus. 

As a WCCCD student, you can take courses, use facilities, and get involved at any of our six locations.
