Surgical Technology: Central Service Technician
The Surgical Technology curriculum is designed to enable you to perform a variety of duties, as well as provide technical support to the surgical team in the operating room before, during and after surgery. The Central Service Technician is responsible for the procurement of surgical supplies and equipment. Central Service Technicians are directly responsible for decontaminating, cleaning, processing, assembly, sterilizing, storage and distribution of sterile surgical instrumentation and supplies. They may also provide support to all patient care services that require sterile supplies.
Central Service Technicians work in the following facilities:
- General medical and surgical hospitals
- Outpatient care centers
- Physician offices
- Colleges, universities, and professional schools

What’s Required to Complete the Surgical Technology: Central Service Technician Program?
A certificate in Surgical Technology: Central Service from WCCCD requires 10 credits to complete.
How Long Does it Take to Earn a Surgical Technology: Central Service Technician Certificate?
Most Central Service Technician students take three semesters (1 year) to earn a certificate of completion, which includes an externship clinical rotation at a local affiliate hospital. Upon successful completion, students are eligible to sit for the national certification examination offered by IAHCSMM (International Association of Healthcare Material Management).
What Will I Learn as a Surgical Technology: Central Service Technician student?
WCCCD central service technician students are trained in principles, methods and control of sterilization processes; and the cleaning, processing, packaging, distributing, storing and inventory control of sterile supply, instruments, trays and equipment in health care facilities.
